Chapter Nine

“Apparently, it wasn’t food poisoning. Bree wasn’t sick after that one time. Poor thing.”

Alone in the privacy of her guest room, Adya sat cross-legged on the bed in front of the extra laptop Bree had lent her. It was close to one a.m. and everyone else had gone to sleep. She gazed at Luke’s image on the computer screen, drinking in every feature of his beloved rugged face. She’d only been apart from him for a few days, and already she missed him more than she’d ever thought she would.

This is what it feels like to be in love.

Despite her track record with men, she’d managed to avoid the feeling before, the yearning that made her chest ache. It was both wonderful and scary to experience such strong emotions. On one hand, knowing Luke and Penny waited for her back home in Cincinnati was amazing. For the first time in her life, she had a place she truly belonged. But with love came the fear of losing it. What if one of them got hurt or sick or died, or Luke changed his mind about Adya and ended their relationship? All sorts of things could go wrong to steal her new family away.

But right now, in this moment, Luke’s eyes shone when they looked at her. Even in an electronic image she could see the emotion there. Adya drank it in and bathed in it.

“Wow, that’s a lot of bad luck for one bride,” Luke said. “At this rate, she’s going to self-destruct before her wedding day.”

“At least the swelling in her face is going down. And the shoplifting thing was actually sort of funny. But throwing up in the middle of a restaurant? It’ll be a long time before Bree can find the humor in that memory.” She studied Luke’s strong-boned face and the shaggy hair she wanted to stroke her hands through. To feel the tickle of his beard and moustache on her face—or other parts of her—would be heavenly right now.

“So, that’s all the news from out here,” she said. “What about you and Penny? Anything new?”

He shrugged his big shoulders that nearly filled the frame. “Not really. Just school as usual. The kids are restless. They start out the year almost excited to be back, whether they’ll admit it or not, but as the holidays get closer, they’re definitely ready for a break.” He grinned. “So am I. I was thinking, when you get back, we might all go on a camping trip before the weather gets too much colder.”

“Camping. Wow. That sounds interesting.”

“You hate the idea.”

“No, I don’t. I’ve just never done it.” Adya smiled widely, trying to convince him of her enthusiasm for sleeping on the cold, hard ground. “But I like nature, and I’d love to tent it with you and Penny. It’ll be an adventure. Where is Penny, anyway?”

“She’s asleep. It’s almost ten o’clock here. I wanted to have you to myself tonight, so I waited to get online with you.”
